Sounder by Sounder Industries is an iPad and iPhone 4/S stand and natural amplifier which promises to double the volume of the docked device. The Sounder contains no electronics or active elements and each amplifier is hand made from reused wood (and is therefore unique). The three versions offered by Sounder Industries include one made from timber reclaimed from the iconic Coney Island Boardwalk.
Sounder Industries' amplifier works in a similar way to the eco-amp, though this wooden model seems likely to be both more robust and less portable than its lightweight competitor. Like the eco-amp, the Sounder utilizes a horn shape reminiscent of a gramophone to boost the volume of the iPad’s speaker output to a reported double the volume. The Sounder can also be used as a stand with the iPad or iPhone 4/S for watching movies, Skype calling, etc.
The Sounder is currently the subject of a Kickstarter campaign with a tipping point of US$50,000, set to end July 21. The Sounder amp is offered in three different versions, ranging from a pledge of $75 to secure the base yellow pine lumber in natural finish, to $99 for a black painted version and $175 for the Coney Island Boardwalk model.
The video below shows the manufacturing process of the Sounder in further detail.
